100th Anniversary of the Stayner Garden Club
The Stayner Garden Club (aka Stayner Horticultural Society) was created on April 27th , 1923 by a group of people that wished to make Stayner look beautiful.
The club is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Last fall they purchased a new fountain, and it is being commemorated to Clearview Township today. In 2000 the Stayner Kinsmen completed a restoration of the garden and pond section of the fountain and were supported by the Stayner Heritage Society. Last year, the Township completed another restoration of the stone facia around the perimeter.
It was the club’s motto then and now to help make Stayner one of Ontario’s prettiest small towns by beautifying the landscape. Every week during the late spring, summer and early fall, volunteers tend 6 gardens by weeding, planting, and updating the gardens as required with new annuals and perennials.
Background
The Canadian Tulip Festival, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the National Capital Commission are celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands with the Liberation75 Tulip. The goal is to cover the country in 1.1 Million Liberation75 Tulips in honour of the 1.1 million Canadians who served during the Second World War.
Starting in late October 2019 in Clearview Township, 450 “Liberation75 Tulip” bulbs were planted by volunteers from the Brentwood Horticultural Society, Creemore Horticultural Society and the Stayner Garden Club. The Liberation75 Tulip is an early-mid blooming hearty flower, that is bright orange with crown-shaped petals. Since 2016, Clearview Township has planted commemorative tulips and hosted a Tulip Celebration in May. The annual Clearview Tulip Day and Community BBQ has attracted between 150-200 people each year to the Fountain Park in Stayner. The tulip garden at Fountain Park is listed on Canada’s Garden Route (www.canadasgardenroute.ca). Other special events have been held in Brentwood and Creemore to celebrate the tulip blooms.
